So, Gramps 5.0 can be a version for trying the DB-API. In this version, we can get some testing of it in a variety of environments, and decide if we wish to remove BSDDB. If we do want to remove BSDDB, Gramps 5.1 can move to making DB-API the default, and begin to transition to a SQL-only Gramps heading to one official backend (using a variety of SQL engines).

  1. I use Gramps to manage my family tree. It is written in python and it has stopped working. I resently upgraded to gnome 2.2 but it has been a while since I tried Gramps I don't know if that was the cause.
  2. Complete summaries of the Gentoo Linux and Arch Linux projects are available.; Note: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the 'nautilus' and 'gnome-shell' packages. The apache web server is listed as 'httpd' and the Linux kernel is listed as 'linux'.

If however things don't work, then we can stay with BSDDB. The only remaining issue is that of integrating filters with SQL. Nick has volunteered to work on that. However, Paul has expressed concerns over making major changes so close to a release. On the other hand, Tim has expressed that the filter work should be completed before the release. There are a few minor bugs, but doesn't look like any real blockers on the roadmap. Any other plans people working on for this next release?

I am delighted to see that an upgrade path has been provided from BSDDB to DBAPI (I haven't yet examined the code in detail). I still think that integrating filters with SQL is a blocker to release, otherwise we will be testing with something that isn't necessarily compatible with SQL filters. I also think that the text metadata (i.e.txt files) handling (see below) needs to be fixed before release, otherwise we will be in danger of having users with new databases that are not structured in a way to allow future work with them.

The question of whether it is too close to a release depends on the possible date for a release. I don't think we have any pressure that is forcing us to a particular date for release, when there are things that should be fixed.

There are a number of text metadata items that should be recorded for DBAPI backends to future proof Gramps upgrades, and the current handling should be refactored to disentangle the processing (i.e. The use of the 'force' parameters), and to disentangle the backend dependencies. I have raised a new bug tracker item to cover all this as 0009429: Text metadata (i.e.txt files) should be refactored and implemented for DBAPI backends. (An earlier version of this discussion is in ) Regards, Tim.

I have raised a new bug tracker item to cover all this as 0009429: Text metadata (i.e.txt files) should be refactored and implemented for DBAPI backends. I agree with Tim that the various txt files should be created for the DB-API database (or any database which ends up in a user's /.gramps tree (or equiv.)). That code has been very helpful to understand a user's problems when they report it on the bug tracker, especially all the helpful 'upgrading' messages which Tim wrote, back when he (I think) implemented those files. Personally, I'd say that is a blocker and thus should be on the roadmap (but last I checked only a few people (Jerome and Nick I think) are allowed to place items on any roadmap.

I don't think we should release even an 'alpha' version of 5.0.0 without adding the txt files first. I don't feel the same about any SQL changes, since that database is not going to be the default for 5.0.0. Any SQL changes are not a high priority for me personally. However, let me also comment that while I can understand why the author of some particular major piece of code might be extremely interested in promoting it and getting users to use it, I think that every mention of the DB-API database - on the gramps-users list especially, as was recently done - should also have lots of cautionary warnings.

Maybe 'this database has not been extensively tested, only by a few people, do not use it on your main family tree, only on a copy of it,' or something like that. Perhaps 'only gramps 'power users' should consider testing the new DB-API database, we do not advise unsophisticated users to be trying it.'

I don't like users being told that it will solve all their problems when we have not done any extensive testing to back up any statements like that - especially on Mac (to my knowledge) and Windows (hi Sam). In fact, I'd like to see a 'warning' dialog pop up whenever any user changed the database preference from BSDDB to DB-API. (This could be one of our display-once-only dialogs but I'd rather have users see it every time, at least until 5.1 arrives.) I'd like to see the 'warning dialog' which pops up when the user hits the 'Convert' button on the FTM give some stronger warnings also. Has anybody actually put a DB-API family tree onto Dropbox (or whatever) and then tried to access it /simultaneously/ from two different gramps instances on two different computers (and from two different IP addresses, to further simulate the real world)?

Not that I can recall being mentioned here on gramps-devel. If we haven't tested that something works, I don't think we should be publicly announcing that it does. Thinking that something should work is not the same as testing that it actually does.

Mavericks (10.9.3) Python shelve error: ImportError: No module named _bsddb Hi when I updated my OS X to Mavericks (10.9.3), my python couldn't recognize bsddb anymore, which worked fine for my previous versions. This is very annoying since it wasted a whole day of mine without a solution. I urge Apple support to give me an answer as QUICK as possible. I have tried a lot of possible fixes on StackOverflow, and I have bsddb installed on my computer, and bsddb3 package.

Also I followed this tutorial to fix the import issues (which worked before I updated my OS). Sddb-modules-to-work/ Please let me know a solution, this is urgent and I can't waste time on this anymore. I'm not a pygame user myself, but it built okay for me, and I was able to import it in python3 with no errors. EDIT: just noticed that the pkgbuild is missing a dependency: python-numpy. My gut feeling says the error comes either from recent python2-setuptools or python2 package update. But my python skills are not good enough to figure out how to solve the problem.
